A Loving Motivation December 27th, 2009 Following Her doctor’s strong advice for the New Year, the couple purchased a treadmill. For several days she walked faithfully. Before long, however, she quit. When her husband confronted her, she unfurled a list of excuses. “It’s boring” was the first. Her husband purchased a television and mounted it on the wall above the treadmill. “It’s too hot,” she further complained. Her husband purchased a fan on a stand and placed it near the exercise equipment. “My feet are hurting,” she moaned. Together, they went shopping and bought her a pair of walking shoes. She finally understood her husband’s deep concern for her—he only wanted her to be healthy. She decided to walk faithfully and quit using lame excuses. The time on the treadmill passed quickly when she thought about how much her husband must love her. Somehow it’s easier to persevere when we’re doing so for someone we love. Whatever God has asked you to do, remember that He too loves you. Reflecting on His abundant love will make the task at hand lighter and easier. It will make this glorious new year even easier to take! Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. PRAYER: Thank you Lord for opening this new year for me to step into. I know that You love me. Help me to see Your love in each circumstance presented in my life, with loving motivation. Amen. A Grateful Heart December 6, 2009 Thou who has given me so much, give me one more thing: a grateful heart. George Herbert Did you ever stop and think (especially now as we enter the Christmas season) that most of us tend to prevent God from giving us the great spiritual gifts He has in store for us. This is because we do not give thanks for daily gifts. We think we dare not be satisfied with the small measure of spiritual knowledge, experience, and love that has been given to us, and that we must constantly be looking forward eagerly for the highest good. Then we deplore the fact that we lack the deep certainty, the strong faith, and the rich experience that God has given to others, and we consider this lament to be pious. We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things? Be mindful of those little blessings you receive from God daily and give Him thanks with a grateful heart! Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. PRAYER: Lord, today I choose to notice all the things You do for me—for Your spiritual blessings as well as temporal ones. Open my mind and allow me to see your blessings with a grateful heart. Amen. |
